Born and raised in Brooklyn, he moved to Dongan Hills in 1959. He relocated to Brick, New Jersey in 1997, but recently returned to Dongan Hills.
Mr. DeFillipo served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A medic in the 264th Infantry, he saw duty in northern France.
At the party celebrating his homecoming from the war, he met Mary Confavick, and it was love at first sight for the couple, who married in 1945.
"He was the most giving, courageous person that I knew. He lived to take care of others and was a hero to many," said his daughter, Roxanne DeFillipo.
Mr. DeFillipo had a thirty-three-year career as a city firefighter. He retired from Engine Co. 153 in 1986.
He was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Mr. DeFillipo was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills.
Surviving, along with his daughter, Roxanne, are his daughter, Jennifer DeFillipo, and his two brothers, Robert and Anthony.
The funeral will be held on Monday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Ann's Church.
Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
