Leland G. Merry, 68, of Effingham, died about noon Monday at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, Effingham, where he was taken following an accident near Elliottstown.
According to Dr. R.R. Lystila, Effingham county coroner, Merry apparently suffered a heart seizure while driving his pickup truck. The truck then ran off the road and into a ditch. Dr. Lystila said the accident was not a contributing factor to his death.
Merry had served for over 30 years as an engineman for the Effingham volunteer fire department, retiring in July, 1972. He had served for ten years as president of the fire department, resigning from the post in 1970.
Surviving are his wife, Vera and son, John, San Dimas, California.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham, with burial in Oakridge cemetery, Effingham.
The body is at Johnson funeral home, Effingham. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today.
