Alexander Humes was born in New Mills, Currie Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of William Home 1800 Currie, Midlothian, Scotland-1882 Greenville, New London, CT and Elizabeth McNeil 1805 Currie, Midlothian, Scotland-1851 Hartford, Hartford, CT. Some members of the family used the Hume/Humes spelling and some used Home which some say was pronounced as Hume in Scotland. On 20 Oct 1856, in New Caanan, CT, he married Eliza Miller 1835-1919, she was the daughter of Stephen J. Miller 1802-1884 and Nancy Weed 1808-1843. They had several children together; Edward D. 1857–1926, Charles Alexander 1859–1947, Addie E. 1863–1948, William 1866–1922, Colin M.1868–1938, Daniel D. 1874–1950, Birdie Elsie May 1876–1927.
