Great Great Grandparents were James Roach, 1720 - 1777 & Lettis Lee 1724 - ????

Great Grandparents were John Roach, 1742 - 1777 & Ann Daly, 1746 - ????

Grandparents were James Roach, 1768 - 1819 & Elizabeth "Betsy" Lindsay, 1770 - 1810

Parents were William Roach, 1782 - 1847 & Jinney Tincey Rowe, 1786 - 1843 of Orange County, Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson Roach arrived in Texas (c.1850) and homesteaded a section of land (640 acres) in Cherokee County, along with his sister Mary K. Roach and brother in-law, John Farish.

T.J. Roach was not Mormon or a Polygamist of any kind, he outlived 4 wives and Kate was the last and only wife to survive after his death.

Of these marriages there were two sets of sisters, Alice & Sallie Farish and Elizabeth & Kate (Katherine) Bobbitt.

The frontier of Texas (1840-1890) was a harsh environment, with no hospitals and limited options on medicine. Doctors were few and far between, with skills & knowledge no where near a modern day Physician.

These women (Alice, Sallie, Josephine, Elizabeth and Kate) all died from natural causes, such as infection, fever and child birth. Lievsay cousin, Marti Richardson said it best about life in the 19th century "Marriage back then was a matter of survival as well as any emotional connection".

Chronological Order of Marriages.
1) M. Alice Farish 1845, in Virginia and she died the spring of 1861 on their way back home to her beloved Virginia from Texas (she never made it).

2) M. Sallie Farish 1861 in Virginia and she died soon after they arrived back in Texas. It is my understanding through the oral history of our family, that Sallie died (1864) while T.J. was serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil war and he did not know this, until after arriving home from the war. T.J. was totally devastated!

3) M. Mary Josephine Broome in Texas on Feb. 14, 1865 and she died shortly (4-6 weeks) after the birth of my Great Grandfather, George Wallace "Gus" Roach, April 10, 1871 and Josephine is my Great-Great Grandmother !!!

4) M. Elizabeth Bobbitt in Texas on March 23, 1876 and she died giving birth to twins, who died as well (she probably died in late 1876 or early 1877).

5) M. Kate Bobbitt on Nov. 14, 1877 in Texas and she died near Rusk, Texas in 1919. Kate was 27 years younger than T.J. Roach and his only surviving wife.

Children:
Alice - Eugenia, George, William & Mary K.
Sallie - None.
Josephine - Eugene (Gene), George Wallace "Gus"
Elizabeth - Twins died at birth.
Kate - Nannie, Thomas, James (Jim).

T.J. Roach was Baptist, he owned and operated a Sawmill on Tail's Creek in Pine Town (now known as Maydelle) and was also Postmaster of Pine Town from Nov. 1856 to April 1860.

T.J. was named a squire by 1855, which enabled him to perform marriages and was named a Notary Public by Texas Gov. Oran M. Roberts in 1881.

Civil War - C.S.A., T.J. Roach enlisted in the Confederate Army in Sept. of 1863 as 1st Sgt., Co. F, 35th Texas Cavalry, Thomas' Division, under Capt. John T. Wiggins & he was 38 years of age.
