Effingham
Sterling E. Adkis, 91, of Effingham died at 8:58 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at St. Anthony's Hospital, Effingham.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ballard Nature Center, Altamont.
Mr. Adkins was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Jasper County, the son of Elmer and Cleda (Merlock) Adkins. He married Lucy Bickers on Dec. 25, 1959, and she preceded him in death in 1983.
Early on he was a Jasper County farmer. He later became involved in used farm implement and used auto sales. In 1962 he and partners Lolami Keller and Joe Olstoff opened KAO Bowl, better known as K Bowl, In Effingham. Sterling managed the bowling alley for many years. He was a member of Effingham Men's Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Mark (wife, Dot) Behrns and Jane (husband, Leo) Westjohn, both of Dieterich, Mike Bickers of Charleston, Ellen (husband, Dan) Sanner and Greg (wife, Brenda) Bickers, both of Decatur, and Kitty (husband, Ross) Fishman of Highland Park; brother-in-law, Lyle Behrns of Dieterich; 14 great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister.
