Walburga was born in 1816 in Prussia [Germany]. She was probably born between May 5 and October 22. In the Declaration for Mother's Army Pension dated May 5, 1886, Walburga was age 69. [Her son Xaver Braun was killed July 20, 1864 at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, during the Civil War.] In her death registration recorded in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin later the same year, as of October 22, when she died, she was 70 years of age, as of her last birthday.

She married Joseph Braun in Germany July 2, 1838 [according to the same Declaration for Mother's Army Pension mentioned above]. However, their oldest child, Frank, was born in November 1837 in Bavaria, at least according to his obituary.

The family lived in Bavaria until emigrating in 1850. They landed first at Quebec and then moved west to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Joseph and Walburga had a large family of 16 children. The older children were born in Prussia while the younger ones were born in Wisconsin. Not all the names of the children are known. Some probably died when young. Those known are Frank, Michael, Joseph, Elizabeth "Eliza", John, Xaver and Francis who were born in Prussia (Germany); Mary, Sebastian "Boston," Theresia "Race," and Matthias "Matt," who were born in Wisconsin.
