JOSEPHINE SMITH DIED THURSDAY BURIED IN FT. PLAIN
Enterprise and News, St. Johnsville, N.Y.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 25,1949

A private funeral was held Tueday at 1 o'clock at the Ingalls Funeral Home in Cooperstown, for Miss Josephine J. Smith, 82, a former St. Johnsville resident who died Thursday at her home in Fly Creek after an illness of about two years. Burial was made in Fort Plain Cemetery. Miss Smith was born December 23, 1866, in St. Johnsville, a daughter of Winslow and Margaret Smith. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Cortland Norman School. For many years, she was a teacher in the Port Chester schools and also taught in Amsterdam. She came to St. Johnsville in retirement and about five years ago moved to Fly Creek where a brother resided. She was a member of Maquae Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the D.A.R. chapter, and the W.C.T.U. all in St. Johnsville; the Universalist chruch in Fort Plain and the Daughters of the Mayflower. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Ciora Canbridge, Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Edwin N. Smith, Fly Creek, and Harry S. Smith, of Needham, Mass. A group of local ladies, representing organizations with which she was affiliated here, visited the funeral home in Cooperstown Friday afternoon and conducted brief spiritual services.
