Alfretta was the daughter of Jacob Chrislip Reed (1807-1880) and Anna Shisler Reed (1817-1899). She married Evan Skillman Garrett on June 20, 1874 at Springfield, Iowa. They had seven children that survived infancy; Clarence, Ancel, Clara, John Jasper, Nellie Mae, Willie Amos and Minnie Cecil. She was a homemaker and a member of the Springfield Christian Church.
