From a letter from Emily Brooks Butler, Solomon's daughter, dated 11-24-1858: "She [Anne Brooks, Byron's wife]has been having a fence put around the graves. Byron was buried south of Mother and Emily [maybe a child of Solomon or Byron who died as an infant?]is between. She has had it take them all in. It is a nice fence. It was dug down about three feet and bricked up about a foot and a half above the ground and laid in cement. They say the foundation is good for one hundred years. That cost Ten dollars and she paid fourteen for lumber besides the work putting up and she did not tell me how much that was. She says she wishes that we would all pay a little and get a little stone for Emily's grave. She said if she was able to get them she would not ask us. I am willing for one to do my part of it and help about the fence for she had not ought to do it alone. She says she does not feel as though she could do enough for Byron and that is all she can do. If you can do a little it would help some. If you feel as though you could give a little towards the stone, we will get it."
