Margaret was the last of 9 children (3 sons and 6 daughters) born of William Scott (1713-1795) and his wife Margaret Gregg (1717-1797). Margaret's siblings were: Ellen (1742-1833), Mary (1744-1812), Jean (b. 1746), David (1749-1815), Thomas (1752-1833), Hannah (1754-1830), and William (1756-1829).

Margaret married Ensign Samuel Wells (1752-1830), January 2, 1782 in Peterboro (Peterborough) Hillsborough County, New Hampshire while he was boarding there during the latter part of the Revolutionary War. Margaret and Samuel had 9 children (4 sons and 5 daughters): Thomas (b. 1783), Jane (b. 1785), Samuel (b. 1787), William (1789-1868), Fanney (b. 1791), Hannah (b. 1793), Charlotte (b. 1795), Elfred (b. 1798), and Mary (b. 1801).
