A graduate of Royal Oak High School, he received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and Master of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Brede's early career included instructing in the U of M Engineering Department, design engineer at Standard Oil, and test engineer at Reo Motors. He retired after 25 years at Motor Wheel, and later worked at Saylor-Beal, R.R. Campbell, and General Motors.
He was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy (Ret.), past President of the Ingham County American Cancer Society, and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Michigan State University Club, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and Court One Athletic Club.
Mr. Brede married the love of his life, Peggy Christine Egeler, in 1950. She preceded him in death in 2010, and his ashes will be interred with hers in the garden at St. Paul's Church in Lansing.
Surviving are their four children, Stephen (Ruth) Brede, Petoskey; Pamela (David) Minden, Madison, Wisc.; Thomas (Linda Bedwell) Brede, Summerfield, Fla.; and Sarah (Todd) Marley, Centennial, Colo. Also surviving are brother Dwight (Phyllis) Brede, Los Altos, Calif.; sister Elizabeth (Charles) Peebles, Mason; brother- and sister-in laws John and Pamela Irwin of Holt, and Charles and Connie Egeler of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mr. Brede's life was held Sunday, May 22, at Hannah Community Center, East Lansing.
