Gladia I. (Collins) Smith, 86, Kingsville, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, in Lee's Summit.

Gladia was born Dec. 15, 1924, near West Plains, to Rube and Jenny Collins, the eighth of 11 children.

She worked in the Long Beach shipyards in California during World War II, was a homemaker and mother and retired from a mobile catering service.

After retirement, Gladia enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards with friends and hand-quilting for her family. She was a longtime member of Elm Spring Baptist Church.

Gladia is survived by one sister, Shirley Brown of West Plains; a daughter, Judy Merrick and her husband, Mick, of Omaha, Neb.; a son, James Wells and his wife, Claudia, of Clinton; a daughter, Helen Hodges and her husband, Mike, of Kingsville; and a daughter, Sue Dodson of Warrensburg. She was a loving grandmother to 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden, with interment to follow at the Holden Cemetery.
