Manuel Alvarado
March 25, 1925 ~ March 28, 2011

Monterey - Manuel Alvarado, born March 25, 1925 in Gonzales, passed away peacefully on March 28 after a courageous battle with cancer. He moved to Monterey in 1929 and spent a lot of time on Cannery Row and the Monterey waterfront. He knew many of the legends of Cannery Row, including Kalisa Moore, Doc Ricketts, and John Steinbeck and loved to share his memories of early Monterey with all he met.

Manuel worked in the canneries before entering the U.S. Army, serving in Japan during World War II. Following the war, he returned to Monterey where he worked as a warehouseman and gardener for many years. He enjoyed his membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8679 in Seaside.

Manuel is survived by his siblings, Pete of Monterey, Nick of Seaside, Virginia Lucero of Monterey and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lalo and Phil; and his sister, Florence Trujillo.

Visitation will take place at The Paul Mortuary Chapel this Monday, April 4 from 4:00-7:00pm. Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove this Tuesday, April 5 at 10:00am followed by burial with military honors at San Carlos Cemetery.
