Dorothy Elizabeth Alexander, 85, of Danville, peacefully slipped into the arms of the Lord she loved on Wednesday morning, March 30, 2011, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville.
Dorothy was a kind and gentle soul, a person who had a quiet, calm demeanor and was truly loved by the many people whose hearts she touched throughout her life. Dorothy cared deeply about her God, her family, her friends and particularly the menagerie of two- and four-legged creatures that she took great pleasure in feeding and caring for 365 days a year. She could sit for hours at her patio window observing the antics and shenanigans of the various visitors who ventured into her backyard wildlife paradise.
Dorothy was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Guthrie, Okla., to Charles F. and Carolina (Lange) Gerlach.
They, as well as her brother, Charles, and sister, Madeline, and only child, Cord Alexander, preceded her in death. Son Cord's untimely, accidental death at the young age of 27 in 1989 was a devastating blow to Dorothy that had a huge and painful impact on the rest of her life.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 50 years, Clifford Alexander, a retired teacher; grandson, Justin Alexander of Channahon; a nephew, Bob (Carol) Gerlach of Eagle Mountain, Utah; a niece, Pat Gerlach of Texas; cousin, Julie Powell of Danville; two second cousins, Dawn and Robin; cousin, Butchie Smith of Danville; nieces, Kathy, Nancy and Laura; and nephew, Danny, all of the Tuscola area; special friends, Norman and Jerry Stephenson of Georgetown and Jeff and Donna Cook of rural Alvin; and many, many friends who worked alongside Dorothy at the Danville YMCA and the First National Bank of Danville for many years; also, new friends Linda Parsons and Judy Wright who, along with family members and neighbors, Charles and Richard Gibbons, provided wonderful, loving care to her in the final, difficult months of her life.
Dorothy Alexander was a special person, the type of special person who was a privilege to know and who had a kind word and gracious smile for anyone she met no matter what the circumstances. This world needs more Dorothy Alexanders. She will be truly missed by all who were fortunate to have crossed her path.
Funeral services: 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Robison Chapel in Catlin. The Rev. Jimmy Hopper will officiate. Burial in the GAR Cemetery in Homer. Visitation is from noon until service time on Sunday at Robison Chapel. Per Dorothy's request, memorials in her memory to Oak Hill Animal Shelter in care of Robison Chapel.
