James Gleason, 81

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — James "Buddy" Gleason, 81, of Lake Worth, formerly of Amesbury, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, after a brief illness, with his family by his side.

Born June 19, 1927, he served in the U.S. Navy in 1946. He was a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Eagles.

Mr. Gleason was well known as a barber for over 50 years, offering his services in Amesbury and Delray Beach, Fla.

He leaves behind his proud and devoted wife after 59 years of marriage, Mona (Flanders) Gleason of Lake Worth.

He was the oldest son of the late James and Doris Gleason, and brother of the late Corrine, Ned and John T. Gleason and Bernice Perrault.

Mr. Gleason also leaves behind a large and loving family. He was the father of eight sons, James Gleason and his wife, Karen (Raymond), of Fort Myers, Fla., Douglas Gleason and his wife, Kellyanne, of Taylor, S.C., Thomas Gleason and his wife, Andrea (Valli) of Lake Worth, Francis Gleason of Lake Worth, Michael Gleason of Exeter, N.H., Daniel Gleason of Salisbury, the late Scott Gleason, and Stephen Gleason of Fort Myers; and his only daughter, Pamela (Holt) Gleason and her husband Brian of Seabrook, N.H.

He also leaves 18 grandchildren, Kristy, James, Jennifer, Derrick, Keith, Lisa, Adam, Casey, Erik, Sarah, Patrick, Joshua, Lauren and Skyler Gleason and Brittany, Garrett, Madison and Tanner Holt; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; six sisters, Doris Morelli, Verna Hyder, Pricilla Portillo, Gail Connor, Carol Morin and Virginia Richard; and two brothers, Francis and David Gleason.

Mr. Gleason will be missed dearly but remembered most for his devoted love to Mona, his children and grandchildren, as well as for his singing voice, jokes, smile, kindness, thoughtfulness for others, and the Irish sparkle he always had in his eyes.

ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. in St Joseph Church, Sparhawk Street, Amesbury,. A reception/celebration of his life will follow at the Seabrook, N.H., Legion Hall, Walton Road, 1 to 8 p.m.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving wife of 60 years, Mona Gleason; sons: James, Fort Myers, FL, Douglas, Taylor, SC., Thomas, Lake Worth, FL, Michael, Exeter, HN, Daniel, Salisbury, MA, Steven, Fort Meyers, FL; daughter, Pamela, Seabrook, NH; 18 grand children, and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gleason proudly served in the US Navy, he was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, and Eagles.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 26, 2008 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and again at 5:00 PM, with a memorial service being held at 6:00 PM at National Cremation Society. Flowers may be sent to the National Cremation Society, 1032 N. Dixie Hwy., Lake worth, FL 33460.

ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass took place on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m., St. Joseph Church, Sparhawk Street, Amesbury, Mass., immediately followed by a graveside service at the St. Joseph's cemetery, Amesbury, Mass., and then on to a celebration of his life at the Seabrook, N.H., Legion Hall, Walton Road, 1 to 8 p.m.
