Raymond was born on February 21, 1933, at Maurice, the son of John and Marie (Huisman) Kiel. He was raised on a farm between Orange City and Maurice. He received his education at the Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City, Morningside College in Sioux City, and the San Diego State University in California, where he earned his Masters' degree.

On October 9, 1953, he married Edna Joyce Vander Maten in Newkirk. He then served in the United States Army for two years. They made their home in Orange City, Sioux City, and California, where he was a high school math teacher. He then became employed by North American Rockwell, where he worked on Apollo and the space shuttle. Later, he returned to teaching and tutored and home schooled many terminally ill and recovering students. In 2002, he retired, and then they spent their summers in Iowa.

Mr. Kiel was currently a member of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Wherever they lived, he was active in a church, often serving as a deacon or an elder and teaching Sunday school classes. He had a deep love for his family, extended family, and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
