Alois was born the seventh of 13 children to Peter C and Catherine (Meier) Schmitt/SCHMIDT.

He married Peggy Godsey on August 22, 1953. They had one child: Martha Elsie. They divorced in 1953.

Alois then married Marcella Marie Ryder on September 18, 1965 at the Basillica of St Mary's in Minneapolis (Hennepin), MN.
He served in the US Navy during the Korean War.
