Frank Sotherden Dies; Was Clay Supervisor

Frank Sotherden, 89, of Caughdenoy Road, Clay, former supervisor of the Town of Clay and a bank executive, died yesterday at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital. A life resident of Clay, he was formerly a school teacher in the area. He also had been a mail carrier and justice of the peace. He was supervisor of the Town of Clay for 14 years and a former secretary of the Onondaga Highway Department for 10 years. Mr. Sotherden also owned and operated the Sotherden Feed Food & Fuel Co. for several years and for six years operated the International Harvester dealership in Syracuse. He was one of the original board members of the Cicero State Bank, and at the time of its merger with the Merchants National Bank, he was president of the board. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Clay and was superintendent of its Sunday school for 3 years. He was a member and past master of Centerville Masonic Lodge, North Syracuse, the Scottish Rite Bodies and Tigris Shrine. For more than 30 years, he was a member of the Clay Volunteer Fire Department and also a member of East Clay Grange. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Garth C. Ladd of Fort Worth, Tex., a son, Donald Sotherden of North Syracuse; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sears-Middleton Funeral Home, North Syracuse, the Rev. John W. Kisselburgh officiating. Burial will be in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home at 209 N. Main St. Masonic services will be at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow. Contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
