Lucile S. Sotherden, 96, died December 9 at her home. She was born September 11, 1914, in Phoenix, NY, to Edward Ray Spencer and Lucie Campbell Spencer. She graduated cum laude from Syracuse University, NY, in 1936. Lucile married Donald V. Sotherden in 1936. He preceded her in death after 62 years of marriage.
In 2004, after residing all her life in Phoenix, Clay, and North Syracuse, NY, she moved to Loveland, Colorado, to live with her daughter, Ann Bunyan.
Lucile became the youngest Grand Matron, Order of the Eastern Star, state of New York (the head of NY State OES), in 1955 when Eastern Star in New York numbered 150,000 members. She then was Grand Treasurer, OES, NY, for 20 years and trustee of the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, NY, for 17 years. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, PTO, Centerville Chapter OES, Immanuel Lutheran Church, was a NY State Republican Committeewoman and also held leadership positions in those organizations. She gave recitals and directed many plays and pageants for church and Eastern Star and was secretary-treasurer of D.V. Sotherden, Inc., in addition to raising four children. Lucile and Don travelled extensively, visiting over 40 countries, spanning six continents.
Lucile is survived by son, Stephen E. Sotherden (Joan) of Brewerton, NY; daughters, Jean S. Clune (James) and Ann S. Bunyan (Frederick Sathi) of Loveland; grandchildren, James, Patricia, Bryan, Amy, Jason, Shantha, David and Jayanthi; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband and by her son, Gary F. Sotherden.
A Requiem Eucharist will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Loveland, with Fr. Sathi Bunyan officiating. Committal will take place at a later date in Syracuse, New York.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
