Henry was born in New York and he spent his early youth in Erie County near Buffalo. In 1853 he came to Delaware County, Iowa. The county was newly settled and he established a boot, shoe, and harness shop at Delhi, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting as a Private on 23 Sept 1861 at the age of 29 years. He mustered in Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry on the same day as his enlistment. He was appointed Musician and assigned to the Band. He was discharged on 20 Oct 1862 at Keokuk, Iowa. He mustered out under orders of the war department discontinuing use of regimental bands. His obituary also states he was discharged because of illness.

On 28 Sept 1865 in Chicago, Illinois, he married Celestia A Clough of Concord, New Hampshire. They went west in 1868, locating on a farm near Humboldt, Kansas. They came to Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1869, and on 29 Aug 1869 Henry filed a soldier's claim to land in Indian Lake Township, Minnesota, on the west bank of Indian Lake. At that time Celestia was the only white woman in Indian Lake township. Henry resided there until his death.

Celestia and Henry had three children: Matt, Luna (who died at age 1 year), and Burt who died two months after his father.

It is believed that he built the first frame house in what is now Nobles County. He helped organize Nobles County and was its first county treasurer, an office he held for many years. He was also treasurer of Indian Lake township.

Henry died at his home on Easter morning at the age of 74 years 1 month 9 days.
He was single during Civil War period and served the entire war on the Northern side. After the war, he came to Iowa and married a girl from Delhi, Iowa. After Hank married, he moved to Round Lake, Minnesota where he was a farmer.
