Theodor Buttner was Wendish, a small Slavic ethnic group from southeastern part of what is now Germany, then Prussia. He married Anna Kalmbach/Kallenbach about 1864 in Germany. They will have 8 children, six daughters and one son born in Prussia and then one more son born after immigrating to central Texas.

The family arrived in America on the ship Hanover, sailing from Bremen, Germany on 12 Sep 1877 and arriving at the port of New Orleans 7 Oct 1877. The family appears on the ship roster as Theodor 40, Anna 38 and seven children ranging in ages from 9 to 11 months, as follows:
Maria (marries Gottlieb Kalmbach), Anna/Johanna (marries Paul Stiewart, dies age 24 no children), Heinrich/Henry (marries Malinda Dube), Auguste Carolina (marries Andreas Steffan), twins Bertha Paulina and Martha (Bertha marries Henry Busch, Martha dies shortly after arrival and is buried in same cemetery as Theodor). Son Carl is born in Fayette County, Texas after arrival.

The Buttner name has spelling variations in later generations of Bittner, Buettner, and Beetner.

The family appears on the 1880 Fayette County, TX census. Theodor is a farmer renting 25 acres with 4 milk cows and 3 oxen.

Theodor's death record is found in German on the Holy Cross church records. He is buried in the Old Dunk cemetery, which was the church's first cemetery. His widow remarries to
Freidrich Gottfried Domschula and moves to Walburg, where she is buried at Zion Lutheran Church cemetery.

It is possible that the Theodor Buttner family was related to the Andreas Buttner who came on the Ben Nevis as a widower. Another Kalmbach family arrives in the same area a few years later, Christian Kalmbach and wife and sons Gottlieb and August, and it is possible they are related to Theodor's wife Anna.

Theodor's tombstone lists only a DOD and age of 45 years, but other records are used for his DOB and show him slightly older.
