MEADVILLE, Feb. 11.—Arthur Rusling Bates, 16, son of former Congressman Arthur L. Bates of this city, died in St. Luke's Hospital, Cleveland, O., today of a fractured skull and shock sustained when he was struck by an automobile Saturday night.
Young Bates, a pupil in University school, a private institution at Shaker Heights, Cleveland, was roller skating against traffic on a one-way boulevard when he was struck by the automobile. An Associated Press dispatch from Cleveland tonight said that Coroner A. J. Pierce of that city, after investigation, held the driver of the car blameless. Young Bates was wearing a dark suit of clothes at the time and the motorist was unable to see him until too late to avoid the accident. He swerved the machine over the curb but the boy was apparently struck by one end of the bumper and a fender. The driver, John Bohach of Cleveland, picked the boy up and took him to the hospital. In addition to the fractured skull, both legs were broken.
The father, Arthur L. Bates, went to Cleveland immediately upon being apprised of the accident and will return with the body for the funeral and interment in this city.
Titusville Herald, 12 Feb 1934, p. 3, Titusville, Pa.
