Mrs. Gill was a native of Meadville, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Arthur L. Bates, a congressman from Pennsylvania, and the late Emily Wood Bates.
She studied at Allegheny College, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She remained active in the sorority throughout her life.
She earned her degree at Wellesley College and did graduate work at Columbia University.
She remained in New York City until she came to La Jolla in 1954. She was active in the San Diego Wellesley Club and the Wednesday Club.
She was a longtime member and held various posts in the Republican Women's Club.
Survivors include her husband, Oliver Arthur Gill, a retired vice president of Bank of America, La Jolla; two daughters, Emily, Peoria, Ill., and Elizabeth Sherman, Salem, Ore.; and three grandchildren. Services will be in Meadville, Pa. Cremation was planned.
