Peter Anthony Hermes was born in Andale, Kansas on January 21, 1894 to Mary Thimmesch Hermes and Michael Hermes, who lived in St. Joseph (Ost), Kansas. He was one of sixteen children born to this couple. Pete was married on October 14, 1919 in Greencreek, Idaho to Bernadina (Dena/Dina) Nuxoll where they met while he was following the wheat harvest. They moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado in 1932 where he farmed and ranched and owned a dairy. The family moved to Lamar, Colorado in 1946 where he and Dena owned and operated the Golden Arrow Motel, along with their son-in-law Bernard Westhoff (Irene), until retirement in 1962. They were members of the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Lamar.


Pete was the father of Irene Westhoff, Elmer Hermes, Emma Larsen, Vivian Surbrugg, John V. Hermes and Anna Maria Lanari. He died on August 3, 1966 and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, Colorado.


The headstone was purchased from Sears, Roebuck & Co. by his son John who was a Sears regional sales manager.
