Bernadina Marie (Dena/Dina) Nuxoll Hermes was born May 1, 1899 in Greencreek, IL to John F. and Maria Beckman Nuxoll. When Dena was young, many of the Nuxolls became pioneers in northern Idaho and named their town Greencreek after their home in Illinois. She married Peter Anthony Hermes of Ost, Kansas on October 14, 1919. The family moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado in 1932 where they farmed, ranched and operated a dairy. The Hermes family moved to Lamar, Colorado in 1946 where they owned and operated the Golden Arrow Motel until retiring in 1962. Dena was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church.

Dena's children were Irene, Elmer, Emma, Vivian, John and Anna Marie. She died July 31, 1984 and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, Colorado.
