Obituary --
Probably from the Prescott newspaper, but no indication of the newpaper's name was given; however, there was a penciled note "4/23/45"--
"Mrs. Mattie Belle Aitken, resident of Prescott more than 50 years, died at the Community hospital at noon today, following a long illness.
"Mrs. Aitken, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Tuttle, of Gilroy, California, was born August 2, 1868, in Hudson, Michigan. She was brought to Gilroy in early infancy and received her education there.
"She came to Prescott in 1891 to visit a sister, Mrs. J. C. Martin, whose husband was the editor of the Arizona Miner, later the Journal Miner. She remained to teah school here for a year and a half before her marriage to Hedrick D Aitken, at the Martin home January 5, 1893. Mr. Atken, associated with the Bashford Burmister company for many years, died last November 4.
"Mrs. Aitken was a member of the Methodisst church and very active in the work of the Ladies' Aid. She was also a past president of the Monday club, serving during the First World War, when the club devoted itself largely to Red Cross and other war activities. She was also a member of Golden Rule chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
During the present war, Mrs. Aitken has done an exceptional amount of knitting for the Red Cross and assisted with other war work.
Quiet and unassuming, she devoted her life to her family and her church and to the many kindly acts of friendship, which endeared her to a large circle.
"She is survived by two sons, Douglas and Kenneth, of Prescott, and a daughter Mrs. Donald (Jean) Cutts, of Yuba City, Calif., who is here with her husband. Kenneth Aitken is clerk of the Yavapai county board of supervisors.
"Funeral arrangements are pending at the Lester Ruffner Funeral Home.
