Johnstown Daily Tribune, Monday, December 19, 1898:

John Raab, Sr.

John Raab, Sr., died suddenly at 4 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence, No. 434 Washington Street, Second Ward. Mr. Raab's health began to fail after the death of his wife in December, 1896, but was able to be about his place of business until 10 o'clock Saturday night, when he was seized with a severe attack of stomach trouble. John Raab was born January 9, 1837, in Einheiden, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, being a son of Conrad and Susan Raab, who died in this city, his father on Singer Street in 1872 and his mother on School Place in 1893. He was a brother of Henry Raab, of School Place, and Sophia, widow of George Kneiss, who makes her home with her son Henry, at Millcreek in Upper Yoder Township. George Raab, who was drowned in the Great Flood, was also a brother of the subject of this sketch.

In 1853 Mr. Raab came to this country from Germany with his parents, who located at Millcreek, where his father was employed in hauling ore for the old furnace at that place. A few years later the family moved to this city and located on Singer Street. In 1880 Mr. Raab was married to Anna Elizabeth Vomhoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vomhoff, who resided at that time on Singer Street. There ceremony was performed at the Vomhoff home by Rev. Seick, who was then pastor of the German Lutheran Church. Mrs. Raab died December 4, 1896.

Mr. Raab worked for a few years as a puddler in the Cambria Mills and in 1865 he embarked in the liquor business in which he had been engaged ever since. He was the senior member of the liquor firm of John Raab & Sons. The deceased is survived by the following children: Henry J., of Conemaugh Street, a member of the firm above mentioned; John L., of the Seventeenth Ward; Amelia S., wife of Fred W. Speck, of Adams Street, Ninth Ward; Charles V., of the South Side who is also a member of the firm; Annie E., Justin S., and James L. Raab, at home.

The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon from the deceased's late residence. Rev. John Luepke, pastor of the German Lutheran Church, will conduct the obsequies, and interment will be made in Grand View Cemetery. Mr. Raab was a member of the German Lutheran Church and the Johnstown Turn Verein.
