Henry Raab, Sr.
Henry Raab, Sr., died suddenly at his residence, No. 337 School Place, First Ward, at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon. He had been suffering from stomach trouble for many years and died while seated in a chair. The deceased was born in 1840 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, and was a son of Conrad and Martha** Reitz Raab, who died in this city, the father in 1872 and the mother in 1893. Henry Raab was a brother of Mrs. George Kneiss, of Upper Yoder Township. George Raab, a brother, perished in the Great Flood, and John Raab, Sr., died at his residence on Washington Street in 1898. Another sister died here about thirty years ago.
Henry Raab came to America in 1853 and located at Benscreek, where he worked for several years at the furnace. Later he came to Johnstown and learned the barber trade, and then wen to work as a puddler for the Cambria Iron Company, severing his connection with the Company in 1876 on account of ill health. For some time before the Flood he was employed as a watchman at Hannan's foundry.
The subject of this sketch married on Singer Street Christmas Eve, 1862, to Catharine Hahn, a sister of Mrs. Philip Schultheis, of Potts Place. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Karl Taubner, M.D., who was then pastor of the German Lutheran Church here. Mrs. Raab died June 12, 1899. Mr. Raab, who made his home in the First Ward for about thirty-three years, is survived by the following children: Elizabeth, wife of Charles A. Zipf, of Railroad Street; George, of N. 330 Conemaugh Street; Louis, the Franklin Street grocer; Miss Sue, at home; John V., of the Johnstown Supply House, Limited; Henry Jr., of Pittsburgh; August, at home; William V., of the Seventh Ward, and Frank and Walter, at home.
Henry Raab was a member of the German Lutheran Church and the Johnstown Turnverein. He was a past officer in the German Lodge of Odd Fellows, and served for a long time as Treasurer for Kickenapawling Tribe of Red Men. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Raab residence, Interment to be made in Grand-View Cemetery.
