In 1896, diphtheria plagued the village of Bayport and Samuel Hudson Jr.'s family fell ill with it. He lost his ten-year-old daughter to the disease.
Samuel was shown as a fisherman on the 1900 US Census for Brookhaven. Living with him was wife, Fannie, children; Eva M., Lillie J., Alice M., Donald N., Maude I., and Nelson R. Hudson. Also living with them was Samuel's father, Samuel R. Nelson, aged 74, widower.
Obituary - Captain Samuel Hudson, 58, a native of Blue Point, died Saturday at his home on Park Avenue, Blue Point, following a stroke of apoplexy suffered a week earlier while sailing his boat on the bay. Deceased was a son of Samuel Hudson, of Blue Point, and had spent all of his life there and in Patchogue. He had always been a bayman. Captain Hudson is survived by a widow, four daughters, Mrs. Maude Murthy of Orange, NJ, Mrs. Eva Bishop, Mrs. Alice Udell, and Mrs. William Furlong, of Brooklyn; three sons, Donald, Nelson and Ralph Hudson, all of Brooklyn, also one brother, Robert Hudson of Blue Point; three sisters, Mrs. L.J. Meunch of Bayport, Mrs. Samuel Thompson and Mrs. Stanley Arthur, both of Blue Point.
