Son of Richard and Mahala Hudson, husband of Sarah E. Sweezey, whom he married on November 26, 1848.

Husband of Mary Bransford and father of Janette, Samuel H., Robert Ellsworth, Anna M., Delia or Delaphine (married Stanley Arthur), and Clarice Hudson.

In 1850, Samuel Hudson, aged 23, was shown living with his parents, Richard Hudson, aged 60, and Mahala Hudson, aged 58, on Brookhaven, NY, in the home of his brother, Walter Hudson. Also living in the household were Walter's wife, Mary, and their daughter, Ellen. Samuel was shown to be an oysterman, Walter was shown to be a seaman and his father, Richard, was shown to be a ship's carpenter.

In 1860, Samuel Hudson, aged 33, and his wife, Mary, aged 22, were living in Islip where he was shown as a bayman. At the time, they had two children, Sarah J., aged 3, and Samuel H. Hudson, aged 1. There was a second 1860 Census showing Samuel, aged 33, occupation oysterman, fishing, in Holtsville, NY, wife Mary, aged 23, and children Sarah I., aged 3, Samuel H., aged 8 months and William Hudson, aged 32.

In June of 1863, Samuel Hudson, of Blue Point, aged 37, Bayman, registered for service during the Civil War at Richmond, NY under Captain Edwin Rose, Provost Marshal

In 1870, Samuel and his wife, Mary, and children, Janette, Samuel H., Robert, Ann M., and Delaphine Hudson were living in Islip, post office, Sayville. Samuel was shown as a fisherman.

Samuel was shown as a fisherman in 1880, living in Bayport with his wife, Mary and children, Samuel Jr., also a fisherman, Anna, Delia and Clarice Hudson.

On March, 2, 1896, a fire broke out in the Hudson home on North Country Road and was completely destroyed. The family had gone out for the evening, leaving a fire in the cook stove. The captain's son, Samuel, called by the house to visit his father, and discovered the house filled with smoke. He rushed in to save his father's papers and money, but succeeded only in saving the papers, and sixty dollars in money was destroyed. All was lost but the clothes the family was wearing. The house and contents were insured for $800 by a company represented by W.G. Wiggins. The hook and ladder company answered the alarm promptly but due to high winds could do nothing except to insure that the flames didn't spread to neighboring properties. The building was an old landmark, part of being in Brookhaven and part in Islip.

In 1897, Samuel made plans to rebuild. In January 1897, the family of Samuel Hudson was severely affected with diphtheria. Samuel was completely paralyzed from the waist down and physicians were unsure whether he would recover the use of his limbs.

In 1900, Samuel, now widowed, was living in the home of his son, Samuel H. Hudson, aged 74.

In 1910, now 84 and retired, he was boarding with Karl Rusche, a hotel keeper on Main Street, Brookhaven.
