His father was John Jameson Benjamin, 1751-1781. John served in Gen Waterbury's brigade of the Connecticut State militia in Capt. Mills' Co. in the "New Haven Alarm"; organized for the costal defense between New York and New Haven, and was "slain by the enemy near Horse Neck" (West Greenwich, Connecticut) in 1781.

Is listed in the 1800 Census for Lumberland, Ulster Co. NY. Married with one infant son.

On April the 9, 1806, signed the "Big Book" membership in the Trinity Church, Ashland, Greene County New York

AN ACT to incorporate the Hunter Turnpike Company Passed April 12, 1822 names Gilbert E. Palen, William W. Edwards, and Augustus R. Benjamin as a corporation for the purpose of building and operating a toll road between Saugerties and Hunter NY.

May 4, 1833 granted US Patent #7,567X along with Philo Bushnell for a Machine for shaving shingles

Died intestate and on 29 June 1841. Son, Augustus Benjamin and John Beach were appt. administrators of the estate of Augustus R. Benjamin, deceased.
