U.S. Congressman. He engaged in the coal and lumber business, was justice of the peace for Clearfield, Pennsylvania, in 1878 and prothonotary for Clearfield County (1880-83). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first Congress, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was elected Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives for the Fifty-second Congress and Fifty-third Congress, serving (1891-95). After leaving his post as clerk, he resumed his previous business interests until his death.
