College Basketball Coach, Professional Basketball Coach. For sixteen years (1957 to 1973), he served as head coach of the Louisiana-Lafayette University Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball Teams. He played basketball in high school and earned a scholarship to Hinds Junior College following service with the US Navy during World War II. Shipley began his coaching career at the high school level before he was hired as head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette in 1957. During his tenure he guided the Cajuns to fifteen winning seasons in sixteen years, as they captured five Gulf State titles. Shipley helped the school gain national recognition following their move to the NCAA level during the 1970-1971 season, as they clinched tournament berths in 1972 and 1973. Shipley was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year twice (1972 and 1973). He joined the professional ranks when he succeeded Alex Groza as head coach of the San Diego Conquistadors of the American Basketball Association during the 1974-1975 season.
