On July 2, 1928, while with a group of friends at Lake Champlain, he saw a woman in trouble far from shore. By the newpaper account he swam to where she disappeared, dove to find her on the bottom 25 feet below and brought her to the surface. A half hour of artificial respiration was necessary to revive her. Hundreds witnessed the rescue.
