Sarah Smith was the daughter of Stephen Badlam Sr. She was born on June 16, 1738 in Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. On October 23, 1755, she married Asahel Smith, son of Israel and Mary Smith, at Dedham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. She died at Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts on March 30, 1802.

During the Revolution she helped her husband operate the Smith Tavern in Stoughton, Massachusetts. The Committee of Correspondence and other patriot groups met in the tavern to plan military actions. Her DAR papers state that she was also paid for spinning wool and weaving yarn. When Asahel died in 1779, Sarah continued to keep the tavern open for patriot meetings.

Asahel and Sarah had the following children: Sarah (b. 1757), Joseph (b. 1759), Abigail (b. 1761) m. Elijah Fenno, Asahel (b. 1764; d. 1779), Elizabeth (b. 1765), Lemuel (b. 1768) m. Martha Withington (daughter of patriot John Withington,) Rebeccah (b. 1772), Marah (Mary) (b. 1776), and Michael (b. 1778).

Sarah's brother, Deacon Stephen Badlam, is buried next to Asahel Smith and their son Asahel in Canton Corner Cemetery. His memorial number is 26972433.
