Elbert Severns was the 7th child of Nye Severns & Magdelene Quick. During the Civil War, Elbert enlisted on August 22, 1862. He and his brother Blair served in Company I, 126th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Elbert died of smallpox at the military hospital at La Grange, Tennessee. He was probably buried nearby. He was 26, and not married. Records show he was never paid for his military service.
