John Severns was the 3rd child of Nye Severns & Magdelene Quick. He married on November 16, 1856 in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa, to Amanda Elizabeth Bachelor (1837-1920). Four months later, Amanda was pregnant with their only child when John died in a fall from a horse. He was 29-1/2 years old. He was buried several spaces north of where his parents would be buried later. About eight months later, Amanda gave birth to her daughter Eva Rosa.
Amanda remarried, on September 24, 1861, to widower John Powell (1821-1898), who had three sons: William, Samuel, and Henry. John & Amanda Powell had four children: Mary Emma, Lavinia Ann "Pan", John Grant, and Sherman Matthew. John & Amanda are also buried in Buffalo Prairie Cemetery, along with their children Mary Emma Powell and John Grant Powell.
