Blair Severns was the 8th child of Nye Severns & Magdelene Quick. Blair enlisted with Company I, 126th Infantry Regiment of Illinois on September 4, 1862. His brother Elbert had enlisted in the same company on August 22, 1862; and their nephew John A. Shutes had enlisted with the same company on August 11, 1862. Blair served as a fifer in the 1st Illinois Volunteers for three years and eight months.

Blair married December 7, 1866 to Helen Marie Davis (1840-1919). They had five children:

Maude Severns Richardson 1871-
Ernest Severns 1872-1960
Raymond Blair Severns 1876-1928
Mabel Severns Hamer 1878-1958
