Mabel C. Acord, 90, died at 1:17 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Meramac Bluff Care Center in Baldwin, Mo., with her family by her side.

Mabel was the daughter of James and Kate (Fowler) Chilton. She was born on April 20, 1921, in Braggadocio, Mo. She then lived in Des Arc, Mo. until 1932, when she moved to the Alton area. She graduated from East Alton-Wood River Community High School in 1939. Shortly after graduating, she was employed by Olin Corp. in East Alton until she married Ozzie Acord on Dec. 21, 1941. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1999.

She was a member of the First General Baptist Church of East Alton and remained active in the church until time of deteriorating health. There she was a member of the Women's Missionary Society, taught second grade Sunday school and Bible school for many years. She had been a member of Rebekah's Lodge in Wood River. In 1952, she and her husband opened Acord Music Shop in Wood River where she worked until time of its closing in 1969. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she was an avid fan of the baseball Cardinals.

She is survived by four children, Don Acord of St. Charles, Mo., Rick (Brenda) Acord of St. Louis, Jeff (Kim) Acord of St. Peters, Mo., and Joan (John) Gefferth of O'Fallon, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Todd, Tina, Heather, Kelli, Jason, Justin, Kelly, Haley, and Logan. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by a sister, Ethelyn Reed of Virginia, and numerous nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Dennis, in 1947: four sisters, Lorene Dykeman, Maude Cole, Pat Hanneken, and her twin, Myrtle Fischer: and numerous other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be from 9 until time of service at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, with the Rev. Dan Smith officiating.

Burial will follow at the Upper Alton Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
