Mrs. Henrietta "Hattie" Verdoorn, age 94, of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Henrietta Wilmina was born on December 13, 1916, in rural Sioux Center, the daughter of John and Jennie (Lammers) Addink. She was raised at Sioux Center, where she spent many years helping her parents on their farm. She also often helped her father haul chickens to Sioux City.

On September 4, 1942, she married William Anthony Verdoorn in Camp Haan, California, where "Bill" was serving in the United States Army. After World War II, they made their home in Orange City for four years and then farmed at Ashton for seven years. In 1955, they moved to a farm near Newkirk, where she was a homemaker and helped her husband. Mr. Verdoorn passed away on November 14, 2007, in Sioux Center.

In December of 2010, "Hattie" became a resident of Pleasant Acres.

She was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she participated in all the women's organizations. She also belonged to the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Auxiliary in Orange City.

She enjoyed quilting, knitting afghans, and crocheting doilies, while she listened to her favorite baseball team, the Minnesota Twins.

Survivors include her three sons and their wives, Lt. Col. William (Ret.) and Janice Verdoorn, of Belleville, Illinois; James and Vera Verdoorn, of Hull; and Robert and Kathy Verdoorn, of Hospers; eight grandchildren, Dan Swanger, and his wife, Jessica; Kathryn Verdoorn; William "Vance" Verdoorn; Priscilla, and her husband, Jarrod Gammon; Gina Verdoorn; Jillian, and her husband, Kevin Olson; Chris Verdoorn; and Andrea, and her husband, Will Scheibel; three great-grandchildren, Mckenzie, Aubrie, and Chloie Swanger; two brothers and their wives, Dick and Hilda Addink, of Sioux Center; and Henry and Mary Addink, of Orange City; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Anthony "Tony" and Ann Verdoorn, and a sister-in-law, Betty Verdoorn, all of Orange City.
