Detroit Mayor. He served as Mayor of Detroit, Michigan, from 1884 to 1885.

Stephen Grummond worked as a teenager on sailing vessels during the sailing season and went to school in the Winter. He purchased a small sailing vessel and captained that vessel for six years. Stephen was able to build up his fleet of sailing vessels and steam-driven vessels throughout his career. Stephen has a memorial in Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan, which lists all of his children. However, only six family members are buried there.

It is difficult to ignore any of the brothers or sisters of Stephen. Stephen's older sister, Mary Jane Grummon, married Richard George Evans. Richard was one of four men who started the Detroit and Cleveland Steam Navigation Company. Upon the death of Stephen's father, Richard Evans was the administrator of the estate. The Dossin Marine Museum in Detroit has beautiful wood and stainglass from the "City of Detroit," which was one of the latter vessels of the D&C.

Stephen had a brother named George Washington Grummond, who most people would say was at least as famous as Stephen. George Washington Grummond died on 21 December 1866 near Banner, Wyoming. George was a second lieutenant at Fort Phil Kearny. Every officer at Fort Phil Kearney had been a brevet lieutenant colonel or lieutenant colonel in the regular army. George hoped that by killing ten Native Americans he would be able to get a higher rank. Instead, George caused 81 soldiers and between 25 and 40 native Americans to die on 21 December.

Stephen Grummond took care of the first wife of George and the children they had. Stephen was able to do that with the money from the success of his steamship company. The children were well educated. Stephen probably paid an attorney to secure a $2,000 court award for the wife and children of George. George never was able to pay the $2000 because of his death in 1866. The first wife and children did receive a pension from the military as did George's second wife and child. Stephen had an older sister.
