U.S. Congressman. Born in East Hampton, New York, he graduated from Williams College in 1811, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 and commenced to practice law in Rensselaer County. He was Rensselaer County District Attorney, (1824-33). In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second and Twenty-third Congresses, serving until 1835. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, was surrogate of Rensselaer County (1835-40) and a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions, (1848, 1852, 1856). He died at age 68 in Troy, New York.
