James McNaughton Rice was the son of Joseph Taft Rice 1787-1854 and Jane Cummings 1793-1858. He married Lydia Matilda Allard on 14 Feb 1861, New York. To this union were born: Susan Allard Rice, Horace A Rice, Matilda Frances Rice, John McBain David Rice, Gilbert Cumming Rice and Mary Taylor Rice.

James M Rice, died Tuesday afternoon at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Henry A Pieper, 1909 Seventh Avenue, after a protracted illness. Mr. Rice was born in Albany in 1834 and had lived in this city more than thirty years. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross and was highly regarded by all who knew him. He leaves two sons; John D Rice of Springfield, Mass., and Gilbert Rice of this city and three daughters; Mrs. Charles Darling, Mrs. Henry A Pieper and Mrs. Charles Dexter of this city.
At the funeral at the residence Thursday afternoon, Rev. E W Babcock, will officiated and relatives acted as bearers.
