Ralph Howard Blackman, 87, of Austin, Texas, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011. He was born on July 8, 1923 in Houston, Texas where he lived most of his life.

Ralph graduated from Milby High School in 1941 and later attended the University of Houston.

During WWII he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943-45. He flew over 30 missions as a B-24 bombardier with the 15th Air Force, based in Italy, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945.

After retiring from a career in purchasing for the Sam P. Wallace Co., Ralph took up woodworking - making numerous display items to complement his wife, Billie's, porcelain artwork. In 1991, they moved to Austin, Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Billie Fay, and his brother, Dail Blackman and sister, Norma Rae Hollis.

He is survived by his son, Jerry L. Blackman and wife, Vicky, son Dean M. Blackman and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Jeffrey Blackman, Melissa Blackman, and Amy Blackman.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home located at 6900 Lawndale Street in Houston, Texas. Interment will be private.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sagebrook Health Center.
