Major League Baseball Player. He was an outfielder making his debut for the Detroit Tigers on September 18, 1940. For ten seasons, he played with the Detroit Tigers (1940-41, 1946-53), missing four years while serving in the US Armed Forces during World War II and was an All-Star (1947-48). He ended his career with a record of 676 hits, 381 runs scored, 87 home runs, 385 runs batted in and a .271 batting average. After his playing days, he served as a coach for the Detroit Tigers (1963-66), Cleveland Indians (1967) and Montreal Expos (1979-81).
