William Frederick Arke was born near Clinton, Iowa, to parents, John and Margaretta (Gossler) Arka. He came to South Dakota in 1900, working as a farm hand for Joe Gruenhagen near Wentworth. About 1903 he came to the August Hanneman farm to work. He married Ida Amelia Hanneman March 26, 1905 at the Hanneman farm. The first year of their marriage they lived in Wentworth, then returned to the Hanneman farm. He spent the rest of his life on this farm, taking over the farming when August retired.
William died at the Madison Hospital after a lengthy illness. He had suffered a stroke four years previous and since then had been in ill health. For the last year he had been confined to bed. His body laid in state at the Arke home until the funeral at Lake Madison Lutheran Church in Wentworth.
Besides his children he was survived by a brother, Charles Arka of Davenport, IA, and four sisters, Mrs. James (Louise) Marshall of Brainerd, MN, Mrs W J (Edna) Prince of Auburn, WA, Miss Lillian Arke of Seattle, WA, and Miss Agnes Arke of San Francisco, CA.
