Tomasita was born in Cuba and was brought to Key West with her father, Jose Luis Valdes after his wife had an affair. Tomasita's mother had another daughter also. The mother was named Digna Miranda. The other daughter stayed in Cuba with her mother. After arriving in Tampa, Jose Luis met and married Blanca Rodriguez and had 5 more children.
