In Nov 1864, at the age of 16, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was a private in Lumsden's Battery Company F, 2nd Light Artillery Battalion. He was sent to Mobile Alabama after enlisting, then to Mississippi where the unit was surrendered along with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana, at Citronelle, Alabama, on 4 May 1865.
For years after the war he was one of the leading farmers of Tuscaloosa County.
He had at least 16 children, with 3 of his 4 wives, 10 of whom survived him. In his application for pension for CSA service, declared on 14th July 1914, he stated he had 40 acres, 1 house, 1 mule that was 17 years old, 1 cow and calf, 1 clock, and 1 buggy.
He took an active part in affairs of Camp R.E. Hughes, Confederate Veterans and frequently attended State Reunions.
He had six brothers, five of which also served in the civil war. Forty years after the end of the civil war, all remaining brothers and sisters came home for a family reunion. This reunion is still held every year by their descendants.
After several months of battling a serious illness he passed away at 1AM on Dec. 4th 1932 at his home. He was 84 years old.
