BEULAH ALBERTA BRAIDA

Beulah Alberta Brinton was born Sept. 28, 1909, in Beatrice, Neb. to William A. and Emma D. (Applebee) Brinton. When she was 3 1/2 years old, her father was killed and the family moved to her grandfather's farm near Pickerell, Neb. Times were hard for her mother, a young widow with five children, but Beulah remembers how the relatives helped out and they managed to get through the rough times.

In 1923, her mother married J. I. Mumford and Beulah and her brother, Albert, moved to Pleasant Township, Lucas County, Iowa with them. Beulah attended country school and one year of high school in Olmitz, Iowa. After leaving high school, she did what many young women did at the time, started working as a hired girl in other people's homes.

On May 19, 1928, she married John E. Braida in Chariton, Iowa. They started out married life in Williamson. After frequent moves, they settled on a farm near Dallas, Iowa. In December 1944, they moved back to Pleasant Township, to the farm where Beulah lived when she first came to Iowa. The couple had four children: Darold, Janice, Jaynane and John.

After her children had gone on to college, Beulah started working some outside the home. She enjoyed working at the Lucas County Memorial Hospital when it first opened, and later at the Russell Sale Barn in the restaurant. There, she made pies and waited tables. She often laughed about the one and only tip she got. It was 10 cents.

She continued piecing quilts and hand quilting and made many quilts over the years for family, friends and others. She frequently displayed them at the fair and won numerous blue ribbons. Her cream pitcher cow collection was a source of enjoyment for her, as well as fishing, traveling and the 4th of July celebrations.

In 1972, they were forced to sell the farm and moved to Chariton due to John's poor health.

Beulah passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center in Chariton, at the age of 93 years, seven and one-half months.

Beulah was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, John; her parents and step-father; brothers, Marion, Floyd and Albert; her sister, Evelyn Bohnstedt; and grandson, Paul Twinam.

She is survived by her sons: Darold of Honolulu, Hawaii and John and wife Linda of Chariton; daughters: Janice and husband Charles Twinam of Washington, Iowa and Jaynane and husband Jack Hardie of Chariton; a sister, Arlene and husband Gerald Foutch of Mason City; two sisters-in-law: Donna Brinton of Mesa, Ariz., and Anne Braida of Knoxville. She also leaves several grandchildren, great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton on Wednesday, May 14, 2003, with interment in the Chariton Cemetery. Rev. Bill Kerns officiated. Music was provided by Virginia Orwig and soloist Phyllis Chilton. Pallbearers were Ellen and Layne Twinam, David and Amy Hardie, John P. Braida, Angie and Matt Anderson and Danny Morrett, a longtime friend and neighbor.
