POLLARD SERVICES THURSDAY

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday for former sheriff and longtime Idabel Police Chief Floyd Eugene Pollard, 79, who died Thursday at McCurtain Memorial Hospital.

Born September 20, 1910 in Harris to Dr. T.H. Pollard and Martha Bryd Pollard.

He served in law enforcement here for 27 years, as McCurtain County Sheriff from 1951 to 1952 and as Idabel Police Chief from 1959 until he retired on May 5, 1975.

He was a World War II Veteran and lifetime resident of McCurtain County.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Jane "Mattie" (Byrd) Pollard on August 11, 1922 when he was 12 years old, his father Dr. T.H. Pollard on August 10, 1964; brothers, Joel Carl Pollard in 1903, Elmer Lee Pollard in 1909, Leon Pollard, killed in World War II in 1944, and Olen Pollard in 1982; sisters, Eula Belle Pollard in 1910, and Martha Louise Pollard in 1922.

Floyd's mother died of complications from childbirth 9 days after the birth of her baby daughter, Mattie Lou Pollard. After the death of his mother, his younger sister Vada cooked and cleaned for their family. The baby Mattie Lou was raised by her grandmother, Mrs. Williamson, in Arkansas.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Idabel, a 32nd Degree Mason, and three times Master of the Idabel Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Temple in McAlester.

Surviving are his wife, Lorene, of the home; three sons, Gene Pollard of Garland, Texas, Leon Pollard of the U.S. Air Force, currently stationed in Panama, and Floyd Pollard of Plano, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Whittlesey of Oklahoma City and Helen Abdo of Oklahoma City; one brother, Virgil Pollard, Idabel; two sisters, Vada May of Pollard and Mattie Lou Hiner of Muskogee; two half-brothers, Glen Pollard of Allen, Oklahoma and Larry Pollard of Pollard; one half-sister, Sue Pollard of Pollard; plus 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

FLOYD POLLARD IN RACE FOR SHERIFF

Floyd Pollard, Idabel, this week authorized the Gazette to announce his candidacy for the office of sheriff subject to the Democratic primary July 4.

His formal statement will appear later.

Pollard was formerly an Idabel policeman, and he has had three and one-half years experience as a deputy, six months under Elorenco (??) Lane and three years under C. H. Roan.
